The zoning code caps a front porch or patio at 15 feet in height in all residential zones, and plan check submittals must show patios, retaining walls and fences on the plot plan. Because the 2025 state fire map adopted by the City Council placed no Monterey Park land in a high-hazard zone, the ignition-resistant deck rules used in foothill fire areas usually don't govern here, though we confirm each parcel.

Is a permit required for a patio cover in Monterey Park?
Yes. The city's permit rules name patios specifically, alongside garages, retaining walls, pools and roofing. Electrical work for lights or fans and gas lines for heaters or grills need their own permits too. We prepare the plans and submit everything to Building and Safety.
What decking material should I use?
Pressure-treated or naturally durable lumber is standard for framing. For the walking surface, wood costs less up front but needs regular sealing, while composites need less upkeep. If the property sits in a mapped fire hazard severity zone, the California Residential Code limits decking to materials that meet its ignition-resistance standards.
Does a deck need railings?
When the walking surface sits high enough above grade, the California Residential Code requires guards with limits on height and opening size, and stairs need handrails. We design guards and stairs to code on every elevated deck and have the connections inspected before decking goes on.
Can I add an outdoor kitchen with a gas grill?
Yes. A built-in grill needs a gas line sized for the appliance, installed and pressure tested under a plumbing permit. Outdoor outlets need GFCI protection and weather-resistant covers, and a sink needs a supply line and a code-compliant drain. We plan those runs before pouring concrete or setting counters.
Will a patio cover count against my lot coverage?
It can. Monterey Park's R-1 zone limits lot coverage to 50 percent of the lot, and roofed structures may count toward that limit. We measure existing buildings and check the cover against the limit during design so the plan doesn't stall at plan check.
